The Eritrean referees for an African Nations qualifier in Zambia failed to arrive on time for the match because of delays in Dubai airport.
Air links with other parts of Africa are terrible from Eritrea. To get from Asmara to Nairobi, which must be the economic hub of East Africa, one needs to fly via Khartoum, which isn’t a hub of anything at all, apart from humanitarian aid.
The terrible air connections don’t help sport, and certainly don’t help business.
The incident reminds me of the embarrasing incident last year where the entire Eritrean football team failed to return to the country after a match in Kenya, reported here by the BBC.
